It’s hard to believe that a month has gone by since my last blog. I was on my way to Guatemala and encapsulated in fear, anxiety and enthusiastic trepidation, but ready for a big adventure.
I experienced all of that. My trip was more productive than I could ever have imagined. Even in the light of my inherent hopefulnes, my expectations were exceeded. Guatemala is a beautiful country filled with beautiful people from all walks of life.
The natural beauty of the country is a tropical trilogy of renewing rain, rich natural resources and distinct diversity. But what I walked away with was the respect with which daily interaction take place between people.
I found the experience of total cultural immersion very seductive. I love my county and am deeply grateful to be an American, but I felt so fully embraced by the Guatemalan culture that to leave there gave me a sense of sadness.
I’ll offer more about my experience in Central America and my plans to return in early 2009, very soon.
